ADULT CERAMICS CLASSES

Chester Springs Studio offers ceramic classes using both wheel throwing and handbuilding techniques. Tuition includes a materials fee covering use of studio tools, glazes, electric kiln firings and your first bag of clay. Additional clay may be purchased at $20 for a 25 lb. bag of stoneware or terra cotta, and $25 for porcelain. Tool kits are available for $25, along with a selection of individual clay tools at various prices. Adult classes are for students of 16 years of age and older. Please bring a towel with you to the first ceramic class for all wheel throwing classes.


Pottery for Beginners

You only need your hands, and imagination when you come to this three hour class. You will have a functional or fun clay piece after it is fired. As you learn how clay behaves, you can use your  hands and imagination to make something useful and beautiful, odd and funny, or strange and exciting. Or a little of it all…What are your hands telling you to do? For students 16 years and older.

This is a handbuilding/wheel throwing class with weekly demos. We will explore how surface texture alters the resulting aesthetic of a glazed piece. Special techniques will include applying surface texture, using templates, and faceting. Emphasis will be on the growth of each individual student. Beginners will focus on basic technique while more advanced students will have the opportunity to explore individual projects in their own style.

This is a handbuilding and wheelthrowing class .  Demos will be given to highlight each person’s project.  Emphasis is on individual progress and group support.  Any level is welcome but those with some experience will benefit most.

A thrown object begins as round, but where can it go from there? This class, Out of Round, will explore the possibilities of transforming the thrown object to fit your aesthetics. Weekly demonstrations will offer techniques that can be used to alter thrown forms for enhanced functionality.

The underlying premise of the Throwing Concentration Ceramic Class is to afford students, whose principle interest is the wheel, the opportunity to develop and strengthen their skills, to understand the complete throwing process and to work towards having a personal voice in their clay work. Individual instruction will be emphasized with attention given to form, function, surface decoration, and glazing. The class will include weekly demonstrations and projects.

Create ceramics by handbuilding, throwing, or a combination of both techniques. Sculptural, decorative and functional possibilities in clay will be explored through brief weekly demonstrations and class discussions. Develop your own projects as we experiment with hand-building techniques, and basic throwing and altering skills on the potter’s wheel. We will also investigate traditional and non-traditional methods to finishing your pieces. Take your skills to the next level in this ceramic class. All levels welcomed.

Friday PM Pottery Classes

The Ceramic Studio is reserved from 4pm on for potters participating in wood burning kiln firings. This is to provide time to glaze and wad pottery for kiln.


Open Studio

Registration Fee: $35

Open Studio is available only to students (ages 16 and up) currently enrolled in a full semester ceramic class. Continue to work on your class projects during Open Studio. Tech support is available during some open studio times. (This option becomes available online during the process of enrolling for your class.)
