Adult art classes and workshops are available to students 16 years and older with the exception of Life Drawing (18 and up). Some art classes have a materials list (see description). Drawing and Painting Basics: Day Class

The emphasis of the Drawing and Painting Basics class will be learning to draw and paint through the exploration of basic classical techniques. Several sessions will include models with the focus on figure drawing. As you work in pencil, pastels, oil or acrylic paint, you are drawing and composing in tonal values as well as colors. In this class, you will learn how to train your eyes to see values by studying how light defines shape and color, allowing form to emerge. We will use these concepts to achieve your particular goals. There is no experience necessary. Everyone works at their own pace and level. Materials list provided.

Open Sculpture with George McMonigle

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced sculptor, you will expand your skills and talents in this class. As the Director of sculpture for the Franklin Mint, George McMonigle has worked with award winning sculptors around the world to perfect their skills and talents. You will be working in oil based modeling clay on a subject of your choosing.
Dogeorge_mcmonigle_figure_sculpture you want to explore a particular subject like birds, animals or a portrait? Bring your ideas to the first class, and you will be walked through the design and composition stage and on to the execution of your sculpture in the round. If you would like to work on a relief or plaque, that would be great! The goal will be to enjoy the process of creating sculpture while learning in a manner that you can apply to your future works.

Material list

  1. Oil base modeling clay sufficient for the size of you sculpture. Sculptex, from Smooth-On is an excellent choice.
  2. Wood Base and aluminum armature wire.
  3. Clay modeling tools sets of wood or metal and wire hoops and scrappers.

Landscape Painting En Plein Air

Enjoy the beauty of Spring in Chester Springs outdoors as we explore and express the landscape in oil paint. In this class, learn visual skills enabling you to compose a strong composition and mix colors. Drawing with the brush will be emphasized to develop brushwork skills. Demonstrations will be conducted in simplifying and blocking in the painting with bold brush strokes and direct color mixing. A materials list is provided.

Discover ways to express form by establishing the underlying structure from a variety of still life objects. We will focus on drawing a new, uncluttered still life each week using graphite, charcoal, or the drawing material of your choice. You will receive individual encouragement and support of your achievements as you progress at your pace. Instructor demonstrations will help you to understand techniques and materials. This is a great class for young students to develop skills for creating a portfolio. A materials list is provided.

Learn to create dynamic and striking landscape paintings working from photographs in this 5-week class. Together we will explore strategies for interpreting and enhancing photographic references to create lively and expressive paintings and hone our understanding of color, value, line, shape, and composition. Creativity is encouraged and students are invited to work with any combination of 2D media that inspires them the most (including oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, collage, etc.). Make fresh looking paintings with bold colors and energetic brushwork. Working from the still life, interiors, and landscapes this class will hone your technical skills and intuitive eye. Students will learn how to quickly identify values, mix accurate colors, create strong compositions, and use their brushwork to their advantage. We will make lots of fast paintings in this class using large brushes and really explore what paint can do!

The Life Drawing and Painting sessions presents an opportunity to draw, paint or sculpt from the human figure without formal instruction. Students may preregister for a 5 or 10-week class card. Cards are valid for one year from date of purchase, and will be distributed at the first class you attend. Drop-ins are welcome at $20 member/$22 non-member per class (pay at door).
