Color is one of the fundamental elements in any good painting. Both the most expressive and nuanced element of any piece of art, the color choices within an image deepen its visual interest, guide the viewer’s eye through a composition, and communicate space. More importantly, the color relationships within a painting determine its mood. The color harmonies we create play upon our senses like music, resonating within the deepest levers of our psyche.

In this class, students will learn the fundamental knowledge and skills necessary to express themselves aesthetically and creatively through color. Each class will begin with a discussion of one fundamental principle of color theory using easy to understand visual aids and demonstrations. Building on our discussions students will be guided in simple painting experiments and develop the ability to make sophisticated color choices.
