Explore and develop your art skills in our oil and acrylic painting, watercolor, plein air, drawing, sculpture, textile, mixed media, print making, photography and digital media classes. Adult art classes and workshops are available to students 16 years and older with the exception of Life Drawing (18 and up). Some art classes have a materials list (see description). The emphasis of the Drawing and Painting Basics class will be learning to draw and paint through the exploration of basic classical techniques. As you work in pencil pastels, oil or acrylics, you are drawing and composing in tonal values as well as colors. In this class, you will learn how to train your eyes to see values by studying how light defines shape and color, allowing form to emerge. We will use these concepts to achieve your particular goals. There is no experience necessary. Everyone works at their own pace and level. Material list is provided.

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced sculptor, you will expand your skills and talents in this workshop. As the Director of sculpture for the Franklin Mint, George McMonigle has worked with award winning sculptors around the world to perfect their skills and talents. You will be working in clay on a subject of your choosing. Do you want to explore a particular subject like birds, animals or a portrait? Bring your ideas to the first class, and you will be walked through the design and composition stage and on to the execution of your sculpture in the round. If you would like to work on a relief or plaque, that would be great! The goal will be to enjoy the process of creating sculpture while learning in a manner that you can apply to your future works.

Draw what you see by learning to see what you draw. This class will introduce you to visual techniques that make drawing rewarding and fun. Discover ways to express form by establishing the underlying structure from a variety of simple still life objects. We will focus on drawing a new, uncluttered still life each week using graphite, charcoal, or the drawing material of your choice. You will receive individual encouragement and support of your achievements as you progress at your pace. Instructor demonstrations will help you to understand techniques and materials. This is a great class for young students to develop skills for creating a portfolio. A materials list is provided.

Learn how to quickly extrapolate information from the landscape, create mood, and capture space in one sitting paintings. Together we will explore how the rhythm of verticals and horizontals, the push and pull of shapes and colors, the distribution of space, and the simplification of masses serve as critical components for the development of strong compositions. Demonstrations and historically illustrated lectures will further reveal how landscape painters through time have harnessed the language of abstraction to create visual power.

Suitable for all levels, this class is perfect for representational painters looking to hone their skills and develop new strategies for approaching the landscape, as well as for abstract painters hoping to find inspiration in the landscape and expand their visual vocabulary.

Gain new insights into the Renaissance masters and how they achieved their color magic! Adrian Martinez offers each artist (beginners to professionals) five weeks of technical analysis along with real-time demonstrations vividly explaining the three essential stages of Renaissance oil painting. Beginning with a classic still life set up, each artist will complete a basic drawing and then move, when satisfied, to a grey toned under-painting in oil. After finishing this “grisaille”, many transparent and colorful oil glazes are added.

Adrian will guide your progress, taking into account each artist’s personal background and individual taste.

Silk scarf by Jean Marie Baldwin

In the Textile Printing Techniques five-week class we will work with several ancient and modern print techniques on textiles. Techniques include block printing, stenciling, silk screen and gyotoko (a Japanese fish print technique). Students will combine these techniques to create one-of-a-kind designs for clothing or wall pieces. Instruction and demos will be provided. Materials are provided by instructor, and a materials fee of $50 paid to instructor on first day of class. All levels of experience are welcomed.
