Explore and develop your art skills in our oil and acrylic painting, watercolor, plein air, drawing, sculpture, textile, mixed media, print making, photography and digital media classes. Adult art classes and workshops are available to students 16 years and older with the exception of Life Drawing (18 and up). Some art classes have a materials list (see description). Drawing and Painting Basics

The emphasis of the Drawing and Painting Basics class will be learning to draw and paint through the exploration of basic classical techniques. As you work in pencil, pastels, oil or acrylics, you are drawing and composing in tonal values as well as colors. In this class, you will learn how to train your eyes to see values by studying how light defines shape and color, allowing form to emerge. We will use these concepts to achieve your particular goals. There is no experience necessary. Everyone works at their own pace and level. Material list is provided.

Enjoy the beauty of Historic Yellow Springs as you learn watercolor techniques used in the ancient Japanese art of Notan. A Japanese word meaning ” dark-light,” Notan as it relates to art, is defined as the interaction between positive and negative space. Build a solid foundation in your painting through the use of shape and form. Learn to capture the essence of the surface by addressing the view, lighting, background and composition.

Students learn to : 

  • Improve observation skills
  • Develop color and value relationships
  • Build harmony through design and composition

Capture the essence of the scene by making the overall composition simpler, stronger and with a greater balance. Draw what you see by learning to see what you draw. This class will introduce you to visual techniques that make drawing rewarding and fun. Discover ways to express form by establishing the underlying structure from a variety of simple still life objects. We will focus on drawing a new, uncluttered still life each week using graphite, charcoal, or the drawing material of your choice. You will receive individual encouragement and support of your achievements as you progress at your pace. Instructor demonstrations will help you to understand techniques and materials. In the Silk Painting five-week class we will work with a unique process of painting on silk with thickened dyes allowing more control in a painterly effect, producing landscapes, florals, abstracts or any matter of desired design. In this course, we will create a wall piece and a silk scarf. All levels of experience are welcome and all materials are providing by instructor. Ikebana—the Japanese Art of Arranging Flowers

Learn the art of Ikebana—the ancient Japanese art form of floral arrangement. The translation of the word “ikebana” means “Living Flowers” or “Making Flowers Came Alive.” Ikebana is learned by practicing a set of principles that determine stem placement, scale and choice of container. The result is a stunning and distinct style of floral arrangement. Classes include demonstrations, vocabulary, and hands-on participation. Students learn how to prepare and condition materials, develop compositions, the mechanics of assembling components, and the fine art of showing the beauty of the flower, branch and leaf without any one element competing with the others. Each week students will bring home an ikebana arrangement of their own creation. When floral composition and arranging follows the principles of ikebana the resulting arrangement is one of sculpted elegance.

Enjoy the beauty of spring in the vicinity of Chester Springs as we explore and express the landscape in oil paint. In this class, learn visual skills to compose a strong composition to create space and mix colors. Sky, clouds and atmosphere and their effect on the landscape will be the core of the class. Drawing with the brush will be emphasized to develop brushwork techniques and skills. Gain new insights into the Renaissance masters and how they achieved their color magic! Adrian Martinez offers each artist (beginners to professionals) five weeks of technical analysis along with real-time demonstrations vividly explaining the three essential stages of Renaissance oil painting. Beginning with a classic still life set up, each artist will complete a basic drawing and then move, when satisfied, to a grey toned under-painting in oil. After finishing this “grisaille”, many transparent and colorful oil glazes are added.

Adrian will guide your progress, taking into account each artist’s personal background and individual taste.

From Caravaggio to Corot, painters have had different opinions on how an oil painted landscape should look. Pick a master painting, or a style of interest to you, and instructor Adrian Martinez  will work with you to analyze that technique while you complete your own painting—applying your own vision in this five-week course. As in his usual practice, Adrian will also paint his version of a particular style as a demonstration in class along with students.
