Adult art classes and workshops are available to students 16 years and older with the exception of Life Drawing (18 and up). Some art classes have a materials list (see description). Drawing and Painting Basics: Day Class

The emphasis of the Drawing and Painting Basics class will be learning to draw and paint through the exploration of basic classical techniques. Several sessions will include models with the focus on figure drawing. As you work in pencil, pastels, oil or acrylic paint, you are drawing and composing in tonal values as well as colors. In this class, you will learn how to train your eyes to see values by studying how light defines shape and color, allowing form to emerge. We will use these concepts to achieve your particular goals. There is no experience necessary. Everyone works at their own pace and level. Materials list provided.

Open Sculpture with George McMonigle

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced sculptor, you will expand your skills and talents in this class. As the Director of Sculpture for the Franklin Mint, George McMonigle has worked with award winning sculptors around the world to perfect their skills and talents. You will be working in oil based modeling clay on a subject of your choosing.

Do you want to explore a particular subject like birds, animals or a portrait? Bring your sketches, photos and ideas to the first class, and you will be walked through the design and composition stage and on to the execution of your sculpture in the round. If you would like to work on a relief or plaque, that would be great! The goal will be to enjoy the process of creating sculpture while learning in a manner that you can apply to your future works. You may purchase clay at first session or provide your own.

  1. Oil base modeling clay sufficient for the size of you sculpture. Sculptex, from Smooth-On is an excellent choice.
  2. Wood Base and aluminum armature wire.
  3. Clay modeling tools sets of wood or metal and wire hoops and scrapers.

Drawing the Plaster Cast Human Head

Level: All levels

Drawing from a plaster cast offers beginning to intermediate students an opportunity to learn about portrait drawing without the complication of color. Study the structure and proportional divisions of the head and establish the simple shapes of light and shadow. Focusing on isolated features will enhance understanding of their structure and how each relates to the whole. Students can work at their pace and instructor demonstrations will be conducted. Tuesday PM Art Classes

“Tulips” by Martin Pieczonka

Oil Painting, Process from Paper to Canvas

Level: All levels
Limit 10 students

Time: 1:30 – 4:30pm

Location: Fine Art Studio

In this class we will create a picture first on paper, designing the composition using a harmonic grid overlay. After the design is established the drawing will be transferred to the canvas using an oil transfer process and allowed to dry. In the next stage light and shadow will be established in monochrome and allowed to dry. In the final two weeks color will be established to complete the painting. Basic drawing and painting skills are required. Materials list is provided.

  • Week 1  Drawing on paper.
  • Week 2  Drawing corrections and refinements (approx. 30 min.).
    Trace drawing and trace transfer design in oil paint.
  • Week 3  Establish light and shadow in monochrome and allow to dry.
  • Week 4  Establish color block-in.
  • Week 5  Color refinements and finish.

Contemporary Landscape Painting

Explore landscape painting with Claire Haik and see how the beauty of the landscape can be captured through the rhythms of verticals and horizontals, the push and pull of shapes and colors, the distribution of space, and the simplification of masses. These critical painting components are important for the development of strong compositions. Demonstrations and discussions will further reveal how landscape painters through time have harnessed nature’s beauty to create visual power. Enjoy painting the landscape in a fun, relaxed environment; a perfect way to enjoy the changing seasons on the magnificent grounds of the Historic Yellow Springs art center!
