ADULT CERAMICS CLASSES

Chester Springs Studio offers pottery classes using both wheel throwing and handbuilding techniques. Tuition includes a materials fee covering use of studio tools, glazes, electric kiln firings and your first bag of clay. Additional clay may be purchased at $20 for a 25 lb. bag of stoneware or terracotta, and $25 for porcelain. Tool kits are available for $25, along with a selection of individual clay tools at various prices. Adult pottery classes are for students of 16 years of age and older. Please bring a towel with you to the first ceramic class for all wheel throwing classes.

In this handbuilding class we will explore how surface texture alters the resulting aesthetic of a glazed piece. Special techniques will include applying surface texture as well as other demos. Emphasis will be on the growth of each individual student. Beginners will focus on basic technique while more advanced students will have the opportunity to explore individual projects in their own style.

Are you intrigued by the nature of clay, but acquiring the necessary skills to explore it seems so…serious? This is a wheel throwing/hand building class that will help you build your skills through playful exercises into clay behavior. In addition to short useful demonstrations, you may choose to join in occasional group activity designed to playfully feed your creative side, as you pursue your own goals. Every exciting pot began with a handful of clay and someone whispering ‘what if’…you could be that someone. Emphasis is on individual growth and group enjoyment. All levels welcome, but some experience may be helpful.

Sculptural, decorative, and functional possibilities in clay will be explored through brief weekly demonstrations, class discussions, and individual consultations. Develop your own projects and experiment with hand-building techniques, and basic throwing and altering skills on the potter’s wheel. Take your skills to the next level in this ceramic class. While all levels are welcome, experienced students will develop advanced pottery and glazing skills.

Modes of Clay, a 8-week pottery class, will mostly focus on wheel throwing. It will introduce basic forms, as well as ways to alter and decorate using slip and sgraffito. Intermediate and advanced students should come with ideas for individual projects while beginners will be guided through the basics of handling clay at each stage of the process; from wet on the wheel to glazing and firing. This class accepts all levels.

It’s a myth that working with porcelain is difficult. Porcelain is a responsive clay that can rise to tall thin columns or swell to generously bellied forms. It can be translucent, and it’s white surface can bring out the best in glazes. This 8-week class will explore the beauty of porcelain and the best practices for making elegant porcelain pots. Prior experience with clay is a good idea.

Open Studio

Registration Fee: $35

Open Studio is available only to students (ages 16 and up) currently enrolled in a full semester ceramics class. Continue to work on your class projects during Open Studio. Tech support is available during some open studio times. (This option becomes available online during the process of enrolling for your class.)
