Painting Basics*

For the beginning or intermediate student. The emphasis of this class will be learning to paint through the exploration of basic techniques. As you work in either oil, acrylic or pastel, you are drawing and composing in value and colors. We will learn how to use these concepts to achieve your particular goals or ideas by studying how light defines shape and color, allowing form to emerge. Each class begins with a demonstration focusing on a particular topic, with the remainder of the class devoted to working with students at their own pace. Figure model two times.

Exploring the Wonders of Watercolor

During this watercolor exploration we will paint a variety of subject matter with a focus on using big brushes helping us stay loose and juicy so we can exploit the wonder and intrinsic beauty of the medium. We will begin by working with a limited palette, progress through the mixing and effective use of mysterious, dangerous grays, and in the process experience the magic of watercolor by allowing the medium do what it does best!

This class presents the opportunity to draw, paint or sculpt from the human figure without formal instruction. Students may pre-register for a 5 or 10 week class card. Cards may be used from 1/2013 through 12/2013 and will be distributed at the first class you attend. Drop-ins are welcome at $18 member/$20 non-member per class and must pay the monitor at the beginning of each class.

Classes and workshops will be taught by PAFA faculty as part of the Continuing Education program. HYS is proud to be able to work with PAFA again and looks forward to expanding our programs together. This class is a must for anyone interested in portraiture! Learn to draw and paint the eyes, nose, mouth and ears in frontal, three-quarter and profile views. Learn the anatomy of the features and their relationships to head structure. Each feature will be studied separately and then combined to form a portrait. Clear and precise explanations of anatomy, structure, form and color will be presented via illustrations and models. Associated topics include rendering facial hair and adornments such as eyeglasses and jewelry.
