About Historic Yellow Springs

Historic Yellow Springs is a living village steeped in a distinguished history, tradition, and folklore that stirs the imagination of those who visit. The village spans 300 years of American history. Today, the village includes 11 buildings and 142 acres mostly allocated to wooded conserved land. HYS continues to host a wide range of fine art, sculpture, and ceramic classes for adults, teens, and children, boasting some of the best art shows in the area. It contains a beautiful venue for weddings and events and hosts numerous trails for all who visit to enjoy, including passing the revolutionary war hospital commissioned by then-General Washington.

Job Summary

Are you passionate about preserving history and making it accessible to future generations? Historic Yellow Springs is excited to announce a unique opportunity for individuals with a keen interest in history and archival work. We are seeking motivated and dedicated interns to participate in our digitization project aimed at cataloging and preserving our invaluable collection of documents and artifacts.

Essential Job Functions

As an intern, you will play a vital role in our digitization initiative. The internship will involve:

  • Sorting and Categorizing: You will work closely with our experienced archivists to sort and categorize documents, artifacts, and objects based on their historical significance and relevance.
  • Audio Transfer and Cleanup: You will be responsible for using audio management equipment to transfer audio files from cassette to digital format for public use and consumption
  • Scanning and Photographing: You will be responsible for using advanced scanning and photographic equipment to create high-quality digital images of the materials, ensuring their accurate representation and preservation.
  • Data Input: You will meticulously input essential information from the materials into our digital database, helping to create a comprehensive and easily searchable resource.

Competency Requirements

  • A strong interest in history and archival work.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in handling historical materials.
  • Basic knowledge of archival principles and practices.
  • Interest in learning scanning, audio, and photographic equipment.
  • Experience working with historical documents and artifacts (preferred).
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

Duration and Schedule

The internship is anticipated to be a part-time commitment, with a duration of the 2024/2025 academic school year. The specific schedule will be determined in consultation with the selected interns to accommodate their availability and our operational needs.
