When you regularly heat bricks, even refractory ones, to 2,000 degrees they don’t last forever. And after more than 100 firings over seven years, even the heartiest wood kiln needs what accountants call “capital improvements.” Thus, for the past year we have been starting to assemble the money and material needed for a rebuild of the two-chamber wood kiln housed under the O’Rourke Pavilion.

To fund the cause, HYS is hosting a FIRE SALE to showcase artists, ceramicists, potters and pottery from our region. Many of the works which will be offered for sale from June 3 through June 11 were produced on site at our Chester Springs Studio, and many were tested by the fires in our wood-fired pottery kiln while others were fired using natural gas or electricity.

Each artist was able to submit up to 15 pieces, intended to demonstrate the breadth of clay, series of pots, together with stand-alone sculptural and figurative work. The FIRE SALE supports our endeavor to rebuild the wood-fired pottery kiln. 65% of the funds generated from the sale of artwork will compensate the artists and 35% will go towards the kiln rebuild which we hope to complete this Summer. Please come out and support and celebrate the talent of local artists and makers as well as the kilns that are emblematic of Historic Yellow Springs. The wood kiln will be FIRED over the weekend of June 10-11, so stop by to see how this ancient process is done today.

From Matt Wren Ceramics Studio Technician “Fire Sale will showcase artists, ceramicists, potters and pottery from the region. Many produced on site in our ceramics studio, and many tested by the fires in our wood-fired pottery kiln, gas reduction firings and oxidation/electric kilns. Each artist was able to submit up to 15 pieces, which allows visitors to see the breadth of clay, series of pots, as well as dynamic stand-alone sculptural and figurative work. Fire Sale supports our endeavor to rebuild our wood-fired pottery kiln. 65% of the funds generate from the sale of artwork will go directly to the artist and 35% will go towards the kiln rebuild. Please come out and support and celebrate the talent of local artists and makers as well as the kilns that allow ceramic art to thrive in Historic Yellow Springs.”
