Yellow Springs has a long and remarkable history, and visitors can see it throughout the village. Many people notice the stone ruins on the hill behind the Lincoln Building and the Fraley Studio. Those familiar with our history recognize them as the remains of the Revolutionary War hospital that once cared for sick and wounded soldiers from Valley Forge.
This hospital- in its day- was known as Washington Hall.
Washington Hall took its name from General George Washington, who visited Yellow Springs at least twice and encouraged the construction of the hospital. During the Revolutionary War, many important military and political figures passed through the hospital complex that grew here at Yellow Springs.
Despite its importance, the hospital faced repeated setbacks throughout the war. Even so, the people of Yellow Springs overcame those challenges through community support, ingenuity, and sacrifice. Historical records suggest that Washington Hall had a remarkably low death rate for its time. That success belonged to the doctors, nurses, soldiers, immigrants, and everyday patriots who worked together to care for the sick and wounded. Their stories deserve to be remembered.
This year, to celebrate America 250, Historic Yellow Springs is creating a unique experience that brings the summer of 1778 back to life.
Discover how Washington Hall, the first and only general hospital commissioned by the Continental Congress during the Revolutionary War, became the Hospital Department’s headquarters and the main supply depot for medical supplies in the Middle Department. Learn why it was established at Yellow Springs and how it survived its most challenging year.
Community, patriotism, and compassion made Washington Hall’s success possible. Meet some of the remarkable people who shaped its story, and explore the very place where those events unfolded more than two centuries ago.
