Giving Through a Donor-Advised Fund

A donor-advised fund (DAF) is a charitable investment account with a sponsoring organization that has immediate tax benefits and allows donors to recommend grants to qualified non-profit organizations over time. It makes managing your charitable contributions and fulfilling your philanthropic goals simple and easy.

What are some advantages of a donor-advised fund?

Simplicity: the donor-advised fund sponsor handles all record-keeping, disbursements, and tax receipts.
Flexibility: timing of your tax deduction can be separate from your charitable decision-making.
Tax-efficiency: contributions are tax-deductible, and any investment growth in the donor-advised fund is tax-free. It is also easy to donate long-term appreciated securities, eliminating capital gains taxes.
Family legacy: a donor-advised fund is a powerful way to build or continue a tradition of family philanthropy.

Please work directly with your investment advisor or donor-advised fund sponsor to initiate your gift.

What is a DAF succession plan and how do I create one?

A donor-advised fund succession plan states your wishes for the use or distribution of donor-advised funds remaining after your passing. Options include listing charitable organizations as residual beneficiaries, naming successor advisors, or allocating funds to the donor-advised fund sponsor (usually the default option). Your donor-advised fund sponsor can share the options specific to you and let you know how to indicate your preferences.
