The Rosato House

Edith Grace Dexter studied at the Chester Springs School during the summers of 1922 to 1926, and at the Fontainbleu School of Art in France. Influenced by the work of the Impressionists, she was particularly fascinated by the effects of light and shadow. The subtle color harmonies in this painting produce a shim-mering, almost timeless quality. “The Faculty Building” was exhibited in the Chester Springs exhibit of the Sesquicentennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1926.
Former students of the Country School recall with pleasure operating a “tea room” on the first floor of the Main House and gathering for conversation, reading, and music at 4:00 p.m. in the afternoon, after a long day of wandering the countryside. Try to imagine some of the sights and sounds if you were standing on the second-floor balcony: at certain times, the shouts and laughter of exuberant students, diving and splashing in the swimming pool in the distance; or perhaps the thrilling music of Leopold Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra or the poignant strains of La Boheme (a fond memory of students after World War II), broadcast from an experimental sound system in the house wired to speakers in the trees.
