As part of America250, this exhibition invites visitors to experience the American Revolution from an often-overlooked vantage point: the critical medical infrastructure that sustained the Continental Army. At Historic Yellow Springs, Washington Hall emerged as a vital wartime hospital serving the nearby encampment at Valley Forge during the brutal winter of 1777–1778. Through this lens, the exhibition highlights the interconnected network of people, well known and largely forgotten, whose leadership, labor, and ingenuity transformed Yellow Springs into a place of healing at one of the war’s most desperate moments.

At the center of this story are Dr. Samuel Kennedy and Dr. Bodo Otto, whose medical expertise and resolve shaped the care of hundreds of sick and wounded soldiers. Alongside them were stewards, attendants, local residents, and patients themselves, each playing a role in the daily operation of the hospital. By tracing both the major figures and the minor characters who made Washington Hall function, the exhibition reveals how collective effort, perseverance, and compassion helped sustain the army and ultimately, the Revolutionary cause.
