Jenny Lind Spring House
Site 8
If Jenny Lind lodged in the double house (known as the “Jenny Lind House”), next to the West Pikeland Township Building, she surely strolled through the meadow, as you did, to take the waters of this reputedly Sulphur spring. 19th century spa guests used the curtained niches in the walls as dressing rooms-a convenience for the professional models sent out by the Academy as well. Virginia McCall’s muted colors enhance the aura of mystery and romance that still surrounds the building. The exterior landscape provided a beautiful and inspiring setting for the Life Class students, one slightly uncomfortable for the nude models perhaps.
As you exit the Water Gardens onto Yellow Springs Road, turn right and cross the road, looking both ways very carefully. Walk along the road, facing the traffic, until you reach the entrance to the driveway behind the carriage house (at one time, the Power House for the Country School) and the Rosato House (historically the Main House).
