The Yellow Iron Spring

Site 11

The Iron Spring is the main source of the name and the long history of Yellow Springs. The healing properties of the water were probably known to the Lenni Lenape long before the arrival of the white settlers. The spring water itself is clear, but the iron settles out to color the stones yellow. The Gazebo, dating from a period of major “improvements” in the 1830’s, stands as a welcoming symbol for HYS.

Walter Stuempfig studied at the PAFA and the Country School between 1931 and 1935. He has been described as “a romantic realist,” who was influenced by Corot, Delacroix, and Goya, and by a period of studying in Italy. Stuempfig taught painting and composition and general criticism at the PAFA from 1949 to 1970.
