Historic Yellow Springs invites the community to the closing events for “Radical Compassion: Art as Social Action” on Sunday, August 2nd, from 10:00AM–4:00 PM in the Lincoln Building at Historic Yellow Springs in Chester Springs. The event is free and open to the public.
The afternoon celebration will feature a morning Exercises for the Quiet Eye gallery experience, An “Empty Cups” serving Switchel, or “haymaker punch”, an old-fashioned electrolyte summertime drink, benefiting Lundale Farm, and Expert Panel Discussion featuring insights on themes from the exhibit. Community members of all ages are encouraged to participate in the evolving ceramic build, creating a shared artwork centered on labor, connection, and collective care.
Presented as part of the larger Radical Americana initiative organized by The Clay Studio, the exhibition explores how art can serve as a tool for compassion, accountability, and social imagination. Drawing from Chester County’s Quaker, abolitionist, ceramic, and Underground Railroad histories, Radical Compassion brings together historical materials and contemporary artists whose work addresses themes of participation, resilience, justice, and human connection.
Curated by Lyla Kaplan, Dr. Tara Tappert and Tim Compton, the exhibition features work by nationally recognized and emerging artists including Chelsea McMaster, Marcé Nixon-Washington, Ehren Tool, Mark Hewitt, Jack Troy, William Earle Williams, and many others.
More than a traditional gallery opening, the culminating event is designed as a community-centered experience that invites visitors to engage directly with the ideas behind the exhibition through conversation, participation, and making.
“Radical Compassion asks how small acts of care, labor, and participation can build toward meaningful change,” the curatorial team shared. “This opening is an opportunity for the community to gather, reflect, and create together.”
The exhibition runs May 25 through August 9, 2026, and is free to the public. Historic Yellow Springs continues its mission of connecting art, history, and the environment through exhibitions, educational programming, and community engagement.
